Bondi Icebergs

The ocean pool with the surf breaking over its edge — the single most recognisable image in Sydney.

Best time
Sunrise, or an hour before sunset
Photography tip
Shoot from the Notts Avenue ramp above the pool so the lanes lead your eye out to the surf.

Bronte Baths

A century-old sea bath cut into the rock shelf, swimmers doing laps as waves wash in.

Best time
Early morning, low swell
Photography tip
Crouch low on the southern headland and use the pool edge as a diagonal across the frame.

Clovelly channel

A long concrete-sided inlet of impossibly clear water, framed by sandstone.
