About Running2Explore
What is Running2Explore?
Running2Explore helps runners discover great running routes through local knowledge. We share routes created and recommended by runners, helping you explore new places whether you're travelling, visiting a new city or looking for a better run close to home. Our goal is simple: help people see more of the world through running.
Who is Running2Explore for?
Running2Explore is for runners and walkers of all abilities. Whether you're training for a race, travelling for work, exploring a new destination or looking for fresh local routes, you'll find runs designed by people who've experienced them.
Why use Running2Explore instead of searching on Strava or Google Maps?
Running2Explore focuses on quality over quantity. Rather than sorting through thousands of routes, you'll find curated runs chosen by runners who know the area and can share local knowledge, highlights and practical tips that maps alone can't provide.
Are the routes created by local runners?
Many of them are. We encourage runners to share routes they know and love, helping others discover experiences they might otherwise miss. Some routes also come from experienced travellers who have explored a destination on foot.
Routes and navigation
How do I follow a Running2Explore route?
Each route includes a map, route description, distance, terrain information and transport details where available. Request the free route pack and we'll email you the GPX file, which can be uploaded to a compatible running watch or app.
What is a GPX file?
A GPX file is a GPS route file that lets you follow a course using compatible running apps and watches. Most GPS devices and running platforms support GPX files, making navigation easier when exploring unfamiliar places.
Can I use Running2Explore routes with Garmin?
Yes. Request the free route pack, import the emailed GPX file into Garmin Connect, then sync the course to a compatible Garmin watch.
Can I use Running2Explore routes with Strava?
Yes. The GPX file emailed with your route pack can usually be uploaded to Strava and saved as a route for future use.
What information is included with each route?
Route pages may include distance, elevation gain, difficulty, surface type, route highlights, transport information, local tips and recommendations. Free route packs also include a GPX file and printable map.
Route difficulty
How do I know if a route is suitable for me?
Every route includes key information such as distance, elevation, terrain and difficulty. Use these details to assess whether the run matches your fitness level and experience.
How is difficulty rated?
Difficulty takes into account distance, elevation gain, terrain, navigation complexity and overall effort. A shorter route with steep climbs may be rated harder than a longer, flatter route.
What does elevation gain mean?
Elevation gain is the total amount of climbing throughout a run. Routes with higher elevation gain generally require more effort and may take longer to complete.
Are there beginner-friendly routes?
Yes. Many routes suit beginners and recreational runners. Use the route filters and difficulty rating to find options that match your ability.
Travel and logistics
Can I use Running2Explore while travelling?
Absolutely. Running2Explore is built for people who love discovering destinations through movement. Routes are selected to showcase local landmarks, scenery, culture and memorable local favourites.
How do I get to the start of a route?
Where available, route pages include nearby train stations, bus stops, ferry terminals and parking options to make planning easier.
Are routes available outside Australia?
Not yet. Running2Explore currently focuses on Sydney, with a long-term goal of building a global collection of routes submitted by runners around the world.
Community
Can I submit my own route?
Yes. If you know an amazing route that others would enjoy, we'd love you to share it with the Running2Explore community.
Do I need to be a local expert to contribute?
No. We're interested in great running experiences. Local knowledge is valuable, but anyone can submit a route they believe others would enjoy.
Will my route submission be reviewed?
Yes. We review submissions before publishing them to help maintain quality and consistency across the site.
Safety
Are Running2Explore routes guaranteed to be safe?
No. Conditions can change due to weather, traffic, construction, events and other factors. Always assess conditions for yourself and run within your abilities.
What should I bring on longer runs?
Consider carrying water, a mobile phone, identification, nutrition where appropriate and weather-appropriate clothing. Your needs will vary with the route and conditions.
